Do Windshield Repair Kits Really Work?
Maybe you saw the rock that dinged your windshield, or maybe a crack appeared seemingly out of nowhere. Either way, your windshield has some damage, and you know it’s a good idea to fix it.
If you’re a DIY-er, you might have thought about using a windshield repair kit. These kits, often found online, promise that you can fix your own windshield at a fraction of the cost of a professional repair. There are also many DIY windshield repair videos online that promise to show you how to do it.
But do windshield replacement kits really work? Let’s talk about the what you should consider before buying a windshield repair kit.
Windshield Repair Kits: The Pros and Cons
The most obvious advantage to windshield repair kits is that they are cheaper than the average professional repair. It’s true: you’re not going to get a windshield repair that cheap (unless it’s done by your brother-in-law).
However, this advantage comes with some pretty significant fine print.
When you hire an expert, you’re paying for their knowledge, experience, and expertise. An auto glass expert has knowledge of different types of damage (and how to repair them) and training in the repair job itself—not to mention professional equipment and high-quality resins.
The reason DIY kits are so cheap is because you’re doing it yourself, without access to professional training or equipment.
What’s worse, though, is that there is a good chance that the windshield repair won’t stick. This could be due to any number of things: the kit directions might be unclear or confusing (leading you to do the repair improperly), the resin included might be low-quality, or the damage might not have been repairablle in the first place.
As you can probably guess, we’re not generally in favour of the DIY windshield repair kit. But it’s not because we repair windshields; it’s because, once the resin is inserted into the chip or crack, that’s it. If a DIY repair is done incorrectly, there’s no way to go back in and fix the damage. In this case, the windshield will likely have to be replaced.

Remember the rule of thumb is as follows:
A windscreen / windshield chip less than 3mm (smaller than a matchstick head) does not usually need to be repaired.
A windscreen / windshield chip less than 25mm (smaller than a £2 coin) is repairable.
A windscreen / windshield chip over 25mm is usually non-repairable.
